Nidec Company History

In 1946, a year after the World War II, Sankyo Seiki(now NIDEC INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION) was established at Suwa, and 2 years later Sankyo started developing a music box. 

The first 6 sets of music boxes were produced experimentally but the teeth were broken soon one after another. 

Though remained 2 sets, it was said bad sound as like striking the bottom of a bucket.

 In the end of 1948, Sankyo finally was able to ship its first 500 music boxes. Later, Sankyo once provided over 90% of worldwide music box industry with the development, production engineering and the global sales network.

The Suwa region of Nagano Prefecture, where Nidec is located, is known as the ‘Switzerland of the East’ and the birthplace of the music box during the post-war period of rapid economic growth.

In addition to electric power steering motors, which enjoy the world’s largest market share, we manufacture and sell automotive products, such as pumps and sensors for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), traction motors for EV and other products.

Appliance, Commercial and Industrial Products

Our appliance, commercial and industrial products include motors for home appliances such as washing machines and air conditioners, motors for commercial products like elevators, and motors for ships and other industrial products.

Machinery

We manufacture and sell industrial robots, various inspection equipment, press equipment and other products used in factories.

Electronic & Optical Components

We manufacture and sell electronic components such as switches, trimmer potentiometers, and sensors installed in industrial electronic machines, as well as optical components such as shutters for digital cameras, smartphones and mobile phones, and image stabilizers.

About Music Box

Nidec’s main sales are motors for HDDs used in PCs and data centres. Music box sales are very small.

Nidec Founder and Chairman Shigenobu Nagamori established the Cultural Memorial Foundation in 2016 to contribute to the development of Japanese culture by helping to foster creativity and high sensitivity, and to make valuable historical music boxes available to the public.
